| Following is the "Introduction." This will give you an idea of the content of this book. The standard is written to represent the perfect dog. The dog that comes closest to that standard at a dog show, or as the judge interprets that standard, is chosen as the winner at that particular moment. When the judge examines the dog, it should be remembered that the dog was developed to herd; therefore, the dog must be able to move with ease and agility. The judge is, when choosing a winner, determining the best bred dog represented at that show on that day. A good breeder will look for intelligence, good herding instinct, sound structure and a good temperament. While considering these major categories, the breeder must also keep in mind the type, coat and color. A sound dog without intelligence is as worthless as a dog with intelligence and instinct that can't move with efficiency because of poor structure. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words...so with the following sketches and explanations, I hope to improve your knowledge of the structure and movement of the Australian Shepherd. |
